Headington: Historical note
Headington has been inhabited for at least 3000 years - excavation has revealed stone age artefacts from c. 1000 B.C. Pottery found near Sandfield Road indicates a probable Iron Age settlement c. 500 B.C. The earliest known name of a Headington resident is that of the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelred II (968-1016) nicknamed "Ethelred the Unready", who had a Royal Palace constructed in Headington (the exact location of which is not yet certain). Famous 20th Century residents included the philosopher Isaiah Berlin, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien.
