InScribe 2004 (page 2)
Composition
InScribe follows Manuel de Codage (MdC) conventions for text entry of hieroglyphic texts with Latin text inserts (labels).
You can also enter Hieroglyphs associated with phonetic values and well known ideograms from the Alphabet/Phonetic Menu. Alternatively, you can type the phonetic transliteration. May common biliteral and triliteral combinations are available through this technique.
Determinatives and general selection of signs from the InScribe 2004 extended
Gardiner sign list can be chosen from the Gardiner Menu which yields selection
palettes such as that for category A (Man and His Occupations shown here.
This visual approach combines the graphical perspective of the ancient scribe with the modern (anachronistic) notion of transliteration.
The menus and palettes can be used to work in left or right facing text direction.
Signs can be combined into groups by stacking rows of one or more
hieroglyphs. Combination signs such as
are available from palettes of pre-composed groups.
Often, however, there is no need to enter a text sign by sign. The copy/paste and drag and drop features of InScribe make it easy to copy parts from an existing text to another. The powerful embedding features of InScribe even let you do this when working in a word processor document without needing to leave the document.
