InScribeX

InScribeX from Saqqara Technology is a new editor for Egyptian Hieroglyphs in development for a 2008 release. The X refers to cross-platform: versions of InScribeX are being developed for Linux, MacOS X, and Windows (XP and Vista). A web site dedicated to InScribeX - www.inscribex.com - is also being written.

Functionality of the InScribeX design is very similar to that of InScribe 2008 except some Windows-only technology such as embedding cannot be used. InScribeX comes with the same hieroglyphic fonts as 2008 and fully supports the new InScribe XML (.INSX) file format and Manuel de Codage (MdC).

InScribeX for MacOS X. This is the main raison d'être for the InScribeX development and our priority release. The software will take advantage of MacOS features and is aimed at the older PowerPC-based Mac systems as well as the newer Intel machines. Current expectation is a Beta program starting around Spring/Summer 2008. However there has been some interest in availability of the EGPZ and Unicode InScribe fonts for the Mac and this is being considered as an early access program. Please get in touch if this is something you might be interested in.

InScribeX for Windows. InScribe 2008 is designed as the preferred InScribe to use with Windows. InScribeX for Windows will nevertheless be useful for some specialist applications, especially when working with material aimed at non-Windows systems. Special Offer: Orders for InScribe 2004/8 (including the the InScribe 2008 Beta Program) received up to January 21st 2008 also cover access to the InScribeX Beta program as and when this is available.

InScribeX for Linux. Apparently, at present, there is little use of Linux in Egyptology or among users of hieroglyphs. Nevertheless this may change so InScribeX was designed to facilitate production of a Linux version, compatible with the Mac and Windows versions. When this get done depends on the level of interest so please let us know if you are interested in a Linux version.
