InScribe 2004 from Saqqara Technology is the current release of the popular Word Processor for Egyptian Hieroglyphs introduced in 1994. Now with an extended and improved hieroglyphic font and a faster and more flexible user interface, InScribe remains the only comprehensive software for Egyptian Hieroglyphs interoperable with word processing software such as Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, and OpenOffice/StarOffice Writer.

InScribe users range from amateur and academic students of Egyptology through to professional Egyptologists and Historians. Applications range from personal use through to thesis writing, academic publications and professionally typeset books.

Note. InScribe 2008 is under development for release in 2008. The InScribe 2008 Beta program provides access to pre-release materials and the (already released) InScribe 2008 fonts.

InScribe 2004 is supplied on CD-ROM and requires Microsoft Windows XP or Vista (& variations such as Tablet, x64 and Media Centre editions) or one of the earlier releases: Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000. Virtual PC for Mac can also be used, although note that VPCM is not yet available for Intel-based systems from Apple.

The InScribe 2004 hieroglyphic (TrueType) font contains about 600 signs beyond the list in "Egyptian Grammar" [A.H Gardiner, 1957], including variants given in "Middle Egyptian" [J.P. Allen, 2000]. Both Left to Right (LTR) and Right to Left (RTL) facing versions are supplied. See picture of InScribe 2004 Font on www.gameset.com. You can publishing in PDF and similar formats for readers who do not have the hieroglyphic font installed. The InScribe program is used to compose and edit hieroglyphic documents following Manuel de Codage (MdC) conventions. Visual editing features include selection of signs from palettes by category or phonetic;  cut/copy and paste, drag and drop. Alternatively you can also type codes an enter text. Transliteration support is also provided. InScribe integrates with office applications such as Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, StarOffice and WordPerfect to edit hieroglyphic text  in-situ. Word processing/desktop publishing are the most popular applications but you can also use InScribe for database, illustration, and spreadsheet work. You can copy texts into applications such as the Adobe CS2 suite (PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) which do not support embedded editing. The software has context sensitive help and comes with a printed User Guide containing a tutorial exploring the features and a reference section.
